"UPH Hospital at Kino Campus has the world's most advanced surgical technology – the da Vinci™ surgical system. The system is the first and only one of its kind in Southern Arizona. The $1.5 million system, installed in May 2005, is currently being used for radical prostatectomy procedures. Hundreds of these devices are in use around the world.

The da Vinci™ surgical system incorporates the latest advances in robotics and computer technology to give surgeons exceptional control of instruments and clear three-dimensional views similar to those obtained in traditional open surgery. The instruments and 3-D cameras are inserted into the patient through small incisions, about the size of a keyhole. A special console gives the surgeon magnified 3-D views of the procedure. The Prostatectomy Alternative:
Prostate removal (radical prostatectomy) is the most common procedure performed on men with prostate cancer. Typically, it is performed through large, open surgical incisions. Open surgery often results in lengthy, uncomfortable recoveries and a significant risk of impotence or incontinence. The da Vinci™ surgical system provides a minimally invasive alternative to open prostate surgery. It is the only operative robotic system approved by the FDA for laparoscopic radical prostatectomies.
The procedure is performed through five small incisions. The system's clear view and precise instrument control allow the surgeon to remove the prostate with less chance of damage to important nerves. An online video is available to illustrate the procedure."
